  7.     Ted Turner has a novel solution for global problems: since
  8. the planet's future is too important to be left to scientists,
  9. give writers a chance to see what they can do. And to inspire
  10. them, the media captain and boss of CNN announced last week that
  11. he was offering rewards for the best literary work with themes
  12. ensuring survival and prosperity. "We're floundering around as
  13. a species right now," says Turner. The world will be a better
  14. place for the winner. The modestly named Turner Tomorrow Awards
  15. carry a first prize of $500,000, the biggest cash award ever for
  16. a work of fiction.
